If you’re an international student staying in Canada this summer, you might be wondering about job opportunities while you wait for fall classes to start. Remember, you can only work in Canada without a separate work permit if your study permit specifically allows it. Check your study permit to see if you’re allowed to work on campus, off campus, or both. If your permit doesn’t mention work authorization, you’re not allowed to work in Canada. Below, we will answer some of the most popular questions we receive about working in Canada as an international student.
What Documents Do I Need to Work in Canada as a Student?
To work a summer job in Canada as an international student, you will typically need:
Essentials
- Proof of work authorization on your study permit: This confirms you are legally allowed to work in Canada.
- Social Insurance Number (SIN): This unique nine-digit number is required for all workers in Canada.
Standard Job Application Materials
- Resume: Tailored to Canadian standards, highlighting your skills and experience relevant to the job.
- Cover letter: A personalized letter explaining your interest in the position and how you would be a good fit.
Additional Documents (Potentially Required)
- References: Contact information for people who can vouch for your work ethic and skills.
- Transcripts or educational certificates: May be requested to verify your qualifications.
- Portfolio (for creative fields): Samples of your work to showcase your abilities.
Do I Need a Work Permit?
Yes, but only under specific conditions.
On-Campus Work
To work on campus without a work permit, you must meet the following criteria:
- Possess a valid study permit
- Have started your studies
- Have work authorization indicated on your study permit
- Be a full-time post-secondary student at an eligible institution
- Have a Social Insurance Number (SIN)
Off-Campus Work
If you’re an international student in Canada and want to work off campus without a separate work permit, you must meet specific requirements:
- You must be enrolled as a full-time student at a designated learning institution (DLI).
- Your program must be at least six months long and lead to a degree, diploma, or certificate.
- You can only start working after your program has officially begun.
- You’ll need a SIN to work in Canada.
Does Canada Have a Policy for Work Hours
Before you start your job search, it’s important to understand how many hours you’re allowed to work as an international student. This depends on the time of year and whether you’re taking classes or on a scheduled break.
Summer is usually considered a scheduled break, unless you’re taking courses. During scheduled breaks, you can work full-time.
Currently, the weekly limit is 20 hours during school terms, but this will increase to 24 hours in the fall. Note that this is a change from a temporary policy that allowed more than 20 hours during school terms, but that policy ended on April 30, 2024.
What Kind of Jobs Are Available to International Students?
As long as you meet the requirements for working on or off campus (mentioned above), you can explore any type of job that interests you.
