What It’s Like to Live in Saskatchewan as a Newcomer

Saskatchewan has been called the “land of the living skies” for its beautiful sunrises and colorful skies, and is known for its lakes and natural beauty. What you may not know, however, is what a diverse, lively, and unique place to live it really is. From a vibrant arts and culture scene, to its many provincial parks, Saskatchewan has drawn in new residents and visitors alike. Just one of the many things that makes Saskatchewan unique is that, although hockey and lacrosse have been deemed Canada’s national sports, curling was actually named Saskatchewan’s official sport in 2001.

In recent years, more and more immigrants have chosen provinces like Saskatchewan as their destination. Offering great economic opportunity and quality of life, especially in regard to health care and education, Saskatchewan has become a prime place for newcomers to settle. It is a great place to live and raise a family as well, due to low and affordable housing costs. According to the 2016 census, 10.5 percent of Saskatchewan’s population were immigrants, and since 2001 the provincial share of Canada’s recent immigrant population grew from less than 1% to 4% in 2016. This is a result of newcomers choosing the prairie provinces for their Provincial and Territorial Nominee programs. Immigrants have benefitted the Saskatchewan economy and community as much as Saskatchewan has proven a great home to immigrants.

Regina is the capital of Saskatchewan, and the second largest city in the province. Though the city has not always drawn in large numbers of immigrants, in recent years there has been a boost in the economy and new jobs created. Now, Regina has become a very attractive option for newcomers who wish to live and work in Canada. Regina has become a dynamic and multicultural place to live

Dining and Nightlife

Downtown Regina has dining options full of every type of food you could imagine. There are bars, bakeries, and coffee shops like Boards N’ Beans Café, where you can enjoy a hot beverage and play board games with friends and family.

The Warehouse District got its name because it used to be an area filled with warehouses. Now, it is a vibrant neighborhood full of restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. One of the most popular bars you should know about is Bushwakker Brewpub, where you can enjoy beer, live shows, and delicious pub fare.

Milky Way ice cream has been a staple of Regina dessert spots since 1956. Though you may find a long line, locals will guarantee it is worth the wait.

Regina has quite a few options for shopping, from malls, to boutique store, to farmers markets. You can find much of this shopping downtown, but can also explore the smaller neighborhoods of Regina.

The Warehouse District, for example, has a number of shops, as well as the Cathedral District which is full of cafes like 13th Ave Coffee House, bookshops, and a few restaurants

Festivals, Arts & Culture, Sports

Each year, Regina is host to many diverse festivals, from visual arts, to music, theater, and various other cultural celebrations. Here are just a few to check out.

The First Nations University of Canada’s Annual Spring Celebration Pow Wow has been going on for more than 35 years. It is an annual 2-day event that celebrates Spring and sharing the culture of First Nations, the predominant indigenous peoples in Canada south of the Arctic Circle. It features drums and dancers and draws thousands of visitors each year.

The Priarie Mobile Taste of Spring in early May has become increasingly popular among locals and visitors alike, and is a 3-night event celebrating fine wines, spirits, and food. It is filled with over 100 vendors and restaurants showcasing their food and wine selections.

For all jazz enthusiasts, JazzFest Regina is an annual 4-day event that takes place in downtown Regina in mid-June. JazzFest welcomes performers from across Canada and North America, hosts over 30 performances, and even has a beer garden and vendor market.

Arts and Culture

In Regina, there are a number of arts and culture experiences to take part in, whether you are a spectator or a participant.

If you like football, Regina is home to the Saskatchewan Roughriders Canadian Football League team. In recent years, the fan base has grown into one of the most loyal and passionate.

For those interested in getting involved in local sports, there are various recreational leagues to join. Regina is also a great place to embrace the outdoors, and many recommend going to Wascana Lake in the center of Regina for a walk or jog.

When you get the opportunity to go to the US for work from abroad, then I would say VisaPlace would be your best option to get all your documents in place. My 5 star feedback is based on the help I received from Danielle Grbic as she was really professional, I would straight away ask for Danielle to be in charge of your process. From the time that Danielle took over my case I felt confident that it will go well and at the end it went smoother than expected. On my own I would never have been able to get this internal work transfer done as a L1 visa and was best for the professionals to take charge. After arriving in the US, Danielle was still happy to assist with documents and advise. A huge thanks to Danielle and VisaPlace

I spoke with Lilly last week and she’s incredible. Very informative and you can tell she definably cares about her job. She wasn’t pushy at all and she’s there to help you figure out if this service is right for you. I’d recommend contacting VisaPlace if you’re thinkin of traveling internationally and you have questions about the different types of permits.

I had a great experience with Andrew Diamond from The Visa Place. Andrew was very knowledgable and helped us every step of the way. When we had a discrepancy with my spouse’s Visa Andrew helped us navigate the system in the USA. He even offered to speak directly to the customs and border control officer to help us iron out the situation. Overall the experience was very good and smooth. I highly recommend Andrew and his services at The Visa Place.

Extremely satisfied with the professionalism, expertise, efficiency, speed and thoroughness at which my file was managed. Fadi & Danielle are true class acts! Their response times were fantastic (especially during a high-stress period), their quality of work was phenomenal, and their willingness to go the extra mile (without hidden costs, no less!) to prepare me for my work permit interview was unmatched. I strongly recommend VisaPlace to anyone seeking legal counsel as it relates to cross-border services. Highest Regards, Krista
