The E2 visa is a highly sought-after visa that rewards those who can invest in a new or existing United States business with a work permit. This is a great opportunity for many foreign nationals from all over the world, but the applicant themselves must be from a country that has a treaty with the United States specifically for this visa. A list of these countries can be found here.
Along with the above requirement, there are several additional requirements that one must meet in order to obtain this visa.
Eligibility for the E2 visa for the United States
There is no specific number for the substantial investment that must be made, but on average you should be able to invest about $100,000. You will also need to be able to invest this money in a business (new or existing), not in another type of investment like a house purchase.
The business that you are investing in needs to be owned at least halfway by someone who is a foreign national from a treaty country, and the investment must generate enough profit for that foreign national and their family to live on.
There is also the E1 visa, which is a visa for treaty traders.
