As reported by Reuters and Time.com – July 15, 2014 – A charter flight from New Mexico to San Pedro Sula was sent on Monday from American soil. The city of San Pedro Sula, Honduras has the highest murder rate in the world and transported back there were 17 Honduran women, as well as 12 girls and nine boys between the ages of 18 months and 15 years.
Sending a Message to Honduran Immigrants
The White House said on Tuesday that Central Americans trying to cross the U.S. border should know “they will not be welcome to this country”.
Héctor Espinal, the Honduras spokesman for the UNICEF said in a recent statement – “These deportation flights send a message to people and families in Central America, but also they send a message that the governments should listen to. The message is that governments should do what they need to do to stop the violent conditions that are making these children leave.”
The return of the Hondurans is said to be the most high-profile example of President Obama’s struggle to gain control of the influx of child migrants from Central America. These migrants which are overwhelming immigration resources and leading to scattered protests from people angry at the government for housing some “border-crossers” in communities throughout the U.S.
Immigrants Put a Strain on the U.S. Immigration System
Tens of thousands of Central American minors have made the hazardous journey to the U.S. by themselves, in the hope of forming an immigration foothold for their families. Because U.S. border facilities are so overwhelmed, authorities often release children into the care of relatives already in the country. The largest number comes from Honduras.
