Tourists from Taiwan no longer face Canadian Visa Requirements
The Canadian government announced on Tuesday that visitors from the country of Taiwan will no longer need a visitor visa to come to Canada. The Canadian visa requirements were lifted after a regular review of immigration statistics from Taiwan.
Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney said in a press release that, “Canada regularly reviews its visa requirements and has determined that Taiwan meets the criteria for a visa exemption.”
Canada and Taiwan have a strong people-to-people bond as well as significant trade and investment between the two countries. Last year over 50,000 people visited Canada from Taiwan, and Canada has a Taiwanese community of over 150,000 people who are either from Taiwan or of Taiwanese descent.
Canadian visa requirements: Criteria
The review by the Canadian government found that the visa approval rate for people from Taiwan was high with an extremely low number of refugee claims – only 23 in the last two years.
According to Citizenship and Immigration Canada, whether a country has Canadian visa requirements is based on several factors, including: asylum rates, removal cooperation, immigration violation statistics and the integrity of travel documents
