Hi. This is Michael Niren. I’m an immigration lawyer and founder of VisaPlace.com. I’m here today to talk to you about the new parental and grandparents sponsorship that’s going to be opening up, re-opening, on January 2, 2014.
Parental Sponsorship for Canada
It’s a very exciting development because for quite some time, that category has been closed so Canadians who wish to sponsor their parents or grandparents weren’t able to do it. In replacement, we had Super Visas. Super visas worked quite well. They were temporary resident visas for parents and grandparents that come to Canada for a temporary period of time. We process a lot of those super visas. Now they’re going to be made permanent so that’s also a positive development. But the good news I’m going to outline today is the parental sponsorship opening up, re-opening.
Understanding Parental Sponsorship
So what is the parental sponsorship about? It’s, as I stated, for Canadians who wish to sponsor their parents or grandparents. Permanent residents can do that too. It takes a long time. We are hoping that the backlog that existed for many years has now been cleared and the government is promising faster processing. On the negative side, there’s only 5,000 applications that will be permitted per year. The financial restrictions will be more severe for Canadians. They have to meet higher income thresholds and the undertakings will be extended to 20 years.
