Are you a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident who wishes to sponsor their parents or grandparents to come to Canada? You are not alone. Many people from all over Canada wish to sponsor their parents and grandparents to come to Canada and were extremely disappointed when the program was suspended in order to give the government a chance to clear the backlog.
Requirements for the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program
But it’s good news for those individuals who want to sponsor their parents and grandparents, because the government of Canada recently announced that they would be re-opening the program as soon as January 2, 2014.
However, the program will be a little different this time around because there will be tighter requirements that those who wish to sponsor must meet.
Requirements for Sponsorship to Canada
Anyone who sponsors someone to Canada – whether it is a spouse or a relative – must be able to provide financial support for them, and they must be able to demonstrate this with evidence of their income. Sponsors of parents and grandparents will now have to be able to meet income requirements that are 30 per cent higher, while also committing to sponsor their parents and grandparents for 20 years instead of 10, which is what the number is now.
There will also only be about 5,000 applications accepted when the program opens, as the government is still working on the previous backlog. Through 2012 and 2013, the government says they expect to admit 50,000 parents and grandparents into Canada.
