Canadian Immigration May Change Skilled Worker Points System

By Michael Niren February 22, 2011 1 min. read

Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney will be spending the next month looking for public input on the Canadian immigration points system for the Skilled Worker category.

According to Minister Kenney, the input will be used to make changes to the system that would make qualifying easier for everyone, especially youth and tradespeople.

The Canadian Immigration Points System

Immigrants need a specific number of points to qualify for the Skilled Worker category. Points are granted for a number of different qualifying factors. For example, some levels of education will provide a lot of points (such as a PhD or multiple bachelor’s degrees) while a secondary school diploma will count for zero points. Applicants need at least 67 points out of a possible 100 to be eligible.

While a tradesperson has valuable skills that are needed in Canada, they will generally lack enough points to qualify for immigration to Canada because of their lack of higher levels of education, such as a master’s degree or a PhD.

“A welder from Poland doesn’t need to have university-level French, but somebody expecting to work as a medical doctor does. Perhaps the points system should be more intelligent and flexible to correspond,” said Minister Kenney.

Other categories considered for the Skilled Worker category include English and French ability, work experience, age, having a job offer, previous work experience in Canada and proof of funds.

Do you qualify for immigration through the Skilled Worker points system?

When deciding to immigrate to Canada, it is imperative that you evaluate how you qualify through the Skilled Worker points system. Visa place helped me with my daughter’s sponsorship 3 years ago. Last week I contacted them for some clarification on a different matter. It was about an issue which technically was a problem of CIC’s software glitch and had nothing to do with Visa Place.
Yet Reena Sandu was assigned for my case. she helped me with enthusiasm and showed no hesitation despite me being an ex-client from 3 years ago.
I was very happy that even after 3 years of finishing business, Visa Place were respectful of their clients. Special thanks again to Reena for her enthusiasm and support.
