According to this Globe and Mail article, China’s “most wanted man” has been deported from Canada according to his immigration lawyer. China has accused the man, Lai Changxing, of running a smuggling ring but Lai spent 11 years in fighting being deported from Canada, and Canada could not deport him without reassurance he would not be tortured or executed.
Man deported from Canada despite shaky assurances
Canada was given assurances by the Chinese government that the man wouldn’t be executed or tortured, but the man’s lawyer said that Canadian officials weren’t allowed to attend hearings, and whether the man won’t be executed is truly in the Chinese government’s hands – and a former Chinese Prime Minister said Lai should have been executed three times over, according to the Globe.
