As many as 1,800 could lose Canadian Citizenship
According to an announcement by Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney, 1,800 people who recently obtained Canadian citizenship could be losing their Canadian citizenship. The news comes after a joint three-year investigation (that isn’t yet complete) between police, Citizenship and Immigration Canada and the RCMP.
According to this Toronto Star article, Minister Kenney said that fraudulent immigration applications filled out by shady immigration consultants were one major reason some were losing their citizenship.
Since 1977 only 63 people have lost Canadian citizenship
“We are in the process of notifying them that we will be revoking their citizenship because Canadian citizenship is not for sale,” The Toronto Star reported Kenney saying to the Economic Club of Canada.
Using a shady immigration consultant can result in much more than lost or wasted money, this new announcement shows. When Canadian citizenship is revoked, immigrants can face lengthy wait times, costly reapplication processes and even deportation from Canada.
