Marriage to a Canadian Citizen does not mean that you are automatically Canadian. You must first apply for Permanent Resident status through the sponsorship program. You must then apply for Canadian citizenship and meet the same requirements as any other person seeking Canadian Citizenship.
Applying For Canadian Citizenship
In order to apply for citizenship after you’ve become a permanent resident you must;
- Be a permanent resident
- Have lived in Canada at least 1095 days in the four years before the date you sign your application
- Have an adequate knowledge of either English or French
- Know about Canada and the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship
- Not be under removal order.
- Attend the ceremony and take the oath of citizenship
