Faces cannot be covered when taking the Canadian Citizenship Oath
We recently posted a blog entry on the new Canadian Citizenship oath rule, which stated that effective immediately people are not allowed to cover their face or mouths when taking the oath.
This means that Muslim women will not be able to cover their faces during the Canadian Citizenship oath.
The new rule is a hotly debated topic, with many saying that it encourages Muslim women to be equal in Canadian society and others saying that it removes the Muslim women’s choice of religious clothing – something decidedly un-Canadian.
In our last post, we mentioned that if the Canadian government is so concerned about people reciting the oath properly – which, according to them, is the reasoning behind the new rule – they should have the new Canadians recite the Canadian Citizenship oath individually. The government has clarified the rule in a new Edmonton Journal article, which says that now those reciting the Canadian Citizenship oath will have to sit closer to a judge who can watch their lips. If the judge can’t handle this, additional clerks will be hired to oversee the oath taking.
But what the government will not do, is accommodate the Muslim women by having special ceremonies with only female judges so they can have their faces uncovered – which still forces Muslim women in Canada to choose between their religious beliefs and being a Canadian – completely contradictory to Canadian values.
