A group of United States senators have unveiled a plan to grant United States green cards to foreign students who complete postgraduate degrees in either engineering, math or science at an American University.
The bill is expected to be a huge bonus for Indian students, who are obtaining student visas in record numbers in those fields of study.
Canada also rewards foreign students with chance to apply for permanent residency
Canada already has a similar program in place, where the program the student is in doesn’t even matter. The Canadian program is called the Canadian Experience Class, and it allows people who are in Canada on study permits or work permits who have the right kind of relevant work experience to apply for permanent residency.
The Canadian Experience Class recognizes that people who study and work in Canada have a unique understanding of Canada’s labour market, and if they have the necessary language proficiency they can be a great addition to Canada’s workforce. Now, the United States seems to be catching on to the same idea.
According to the proposal, “The United States must do a better job of attracting and keeping the world’s best and brightest. It makes no sense to educate the world’s future innovators and entrepreneurs only to ultimately force them to leave our country at the moment they are most able to contribute to the economy.”
The proposals by the senators will eventually become a bill to be introduced by the senate, which could be signed by the president by the end of this year.
