On June 13, 2019, the Toronto Raptors defeated the Golden State Warriors 114-110, taking home the Raptors’ first NBA win! This past basketball season has seen the Toronto Raptors rise to international renown with their stellar performance in the NBA finals.
The wins of Toronto’s basketball team, the Raptors, have captured the nation. Although hockey is the national sport in Canada, the Toronto Raptors have stolen the spotlight recently. Game 5 of their NBA Finals series vs. the Golden State Warriors attracted a record 13.4 million Canadian television viewers, NBA.com reported.
The Toronto Raptors are a twenty- four year old team. They were formed in 1995. The team is a member of the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division and competes in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Raptors are the only Canadian based team and play in the Scotiabank Arena. The outside viewing area at the arena is known as Jurassic Park and thanks to the recent success of the team, impromptu Jurassic Parks are being created across Canada. The new Jurassic Parks serve as a place where locals can gather, watch and hopefully celebrate the Raptors continued success.
Basketball is a newer sport in Canada and has taken some time to gain a true following in the nation. Unlike hockey, basketball is a much more accessible sport and does not require significant investment in equipment to play. The audience is more multicultural and encourages wider participation from children of all backgrounds. Basketball enthusiasts hope that this recent run of Raptors victories will lead to an increase in Canadians participating in and viewing basketball.
