When I attended college in the United States, I married a US citizen. With my parents still living in the UK, I found myself missing them very much. After the wedding, money was tight so I didn’t get to travel to see them often. VisaPlace helped guide me in the right direction to be able to sponsor my parents to become permanent residents in the United States so soon I will be able to see them all the time!
Name: Sophia
Date of Consultation: January 2018
Turnaround: 1 year
Type of Visa: Family Class Sponsorship
Background:
Sophia attended school in the United States where she eventually met a man she married. Because she got married to a United States citizen, she became a citizen too. She missed her family in the United Kingdom and hadn’t been able to see them in years. Sophia did some research and found out after she turned 21, she was able to sponsor her parents to receive permanent residency in the United States.
Immigration Situation:
Sophia came to VisaPlace in hopes of being able to be reunited with her family. Because Sophia was now 21 and a US citizen, she became eligible to sponsor her mother and father to the United States. To begin the sponsorship process, VisaPlace helped Sophia gather all of the needed documents and put together her visa petition. We then mailed them over to USCIS. Everything was done correctly and Sophia received news that her parents were approved!
Solution:
Sophia had to wait until she was at least 21 years of age to begin the sponsorship process. To begin the sponsorship process, Sophia needed to mail a visa petition on USCIS Form I-130, along with accompanying documents, to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). She had to prove the family relationship is real. Once USCIS received the petition, the officers had to consider whether to approve or deny the request. When it was approved, the case file was forwarded to the National Visa Center for further processing. Because VisaPlace took the time to make sure Sophia had all the correct documents and filled out the visa petition correctly, it was then further approved and her parents were able to come to the US.
Outcome:
Sophia’s IR-5 family based immigrant visa was approved by USCIS in January 2018. Her parents arrived in the United States just a few months after. Since they are now Green Card holders, they have started working in the United States and hope to save up to buy a house of their own right near Sophia and her husband’s.
