Many working parents in Canada depend on nannies to help cover their child care. Child care and care giving can be great avenues for skilled carers to explore when they are considering immigrating to Canada. The Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Work Pilot were launched in June, 2019 and began accepting applications on June 18, 2019. Caregivers and nannies will now receive work permits if they have a job offer in Canada and a meet the standard requirements for Canadian immigration. Once in Canada, the caregiver can begin earning the two years work experience needed to apply for permanent residency. Both programs will allow for carers to switch employers if necessary. Both programs are now offering occupation specific work permits rather than employer specific work permits. This move is an attempt to correct concerns that inflexible visas bind workers to work situations that are unsafe or abusive. Additionally, it means that an employer will not need to complete a Labour Market Impact Assessment.
What Is The Home Child Care Provider Pilot?
This pilot aims to attract qualified nannies to Canada on temporary work permits with the possibility of gaining permanent residence. The pilot is a 5-year program and allows carers to bring their families with them to Canada. The family members will be able to obtain open work permits or study permits while in Canada. The program will accept 2,750 people each year.
What Is The Home Support Worker Pilot?
This pilot functions similarly to the Home Child Care Provider Pilot but is aimed at carers who are not working primarily with children. Like the Home Child Care Provider Pilot, you are able to bring your family with you to Canada on open permit visas or study permits and you will have the ability to apply for permanent residency once you have met all of the requirements including two years of work experience.
What Are the Requirements For Both Programs?
- Job Offer – you must have job offer in Canada in order to qualify for the program.
- Work Experience – if you wish to apply for permanent residency, you will need to gain at least two years of work experience, in an appropriate field, in Canada before you can apply.
- Language – you will need to be able to meet the Canadian Language Benchmarks and pass the required language tests.
